Free or Paid Traffic for Your Online Business?

free or paid traffic for your online business

So which is better? Free or Paid traffic for your online business?

You can search Google and find hundreds of articles about which source of traffic is better to grow your online business.

The reality is that both methods work.

That’s not to say that I don’t favor one method of traffic over another, because I do. I prefer paid traffic and I’ll explain why later.

When you’re first starting out trying to make money online, you might not have a decent budget to do paid traffic. So you look to free traffic strategies.

What are some free traffic strategies you can use for your business?

  • Joining and Posting in Facebook Groups that allow you to promote your business
  • Craigslist ads
  • Other classified ad sites
  • Making YouTube videos
  • Putting your business link in the signature area on related discussion forums
  • Blogging
  • Press releases
  • Guest blogging
  • Instagram posts

These are just some of the ways to promote your business for free. I do blogging and make YouTube videos. I like doing both so I really don’t consider it work.

The main problem with going the free traffic route is that it’s SLOW. In most cases, you need to build up a following of people who will friend you on Facebook, subscribe to your YouTube channel, follow your blog, etc.

This takes a lot of time. Not only that, you have to be consistent when using these strategies. What I mean is that you have to do these activities at least several times a week. Preferably every single day.

Pick just 2 or 3 free strategies you want to concentrate on and do them every day. Eventually, you’ll start to grow a following and those people will want to know more about your business.

Make sure you’re building your email list as you do this so you can stay in contact with those people.

What are some paid traffic strategies?

  • Pay-per-click ads (ex. Facebook ads, Bing ads)
  • Solo ads
  • Banner ads
  • Buying clicks from a traffic agency
  • Traffic exchanges
  • Paid Craigslist ads
  • Paid YouTube marketing
  • Paid Instagram ads

I primarily use solo ads and buying clicks from traffic agencies.

Both are similar in that you are buying clicks. The difference is that with a solo ad, you are renting someone’s email list and advertising your business in an email. A traffic agency usually gets clicks from banner ads, text and image ads on websites, etc.

The best reason for using paid traffic is because it’s FAST. You get results quickly, sometimes the same day. You can determine if your sales funnel is working or not and change it if you have to.

The major negative against paid traffic is that you can spend a lot of money at first before you start building momentum in your online business. That’s why it’s important to have a budget for marketing.

If you want to go this route, pick ONE paid traffic strategy, and stick to it until you’ve mastered it as a skill and start getting sales.

Once you are getting regular sales, you can add another paid traffic source and scale your business even more.

If you want to do both free and paid traffic, pick one paid traffic source and one or two free traffic sources. This is what I do.

Do these activities consistently, build your email list, and eventually you’ll start building momentum in your business.
